Hone Bailey

Ngāti Tūwharetoa

Hone is a Māori artist dedicated to preserving

and sharing the unique processes

and practices of Māori weaving, alongside

Western sewing and textile techniques that

have been embraced and adapted by Māori.

His upbringing in Kōhanga Reo, Rūmaki,

and Kapa Haka has deeply shaped his love

for and commitment to Te Ao Māori.

He acknowledges the guidance of his

teachers—Whaea Aroha, Whaea Teihi, and

Whaea Ngaire—for nurturing his connection

to culture from a young age.

Hone studied at Toihoukura – School of

Māori Art and Design in Tūranganui-a-Kiwa,

where he focused on traditional weaving and

graduated with honours.

Through social media, Hone has built

meaningful connections with audiences

around the world, fostering a deeper

understanding and appreciation for these

cultural art forms. His work speaks to the

fundamental relationship between these

practices and the natural world, and the

importance of protecting the unique

resources that sustain them.
